Merry Christmas!

It's still Christmas Eve here, of course, but I doubt I'll be posting for the next few days, so you get it now. I hope you all have a happy Christmas, Chanukah, Festivus, Kwanzaa, or whatever you might do for the next day or two.

I got my first Christmas present early -- a permanent LiveJournal account from Six Apart, as thanks for my past volunteer contributions. Yay! It's nice to have the account, but it's even nicer to be remembered, especially considering my volunteer time was a while ago. Thanks, rahaeli, brad, and whoever else was involved with that.

(Of course, yesterday was also an Interesting Day At Work, in which the entire north american user OU was accidentally deleted from our Active Directory domain. We haven't fully migrated from NT yet, so people could still login, but they couldn't access any network resources. Luckily I managed to catch one controller before the changes replicated there, but it still took most of the day to get things up and going based on that. The biggest delay? A bug in HP's remote console access application that in some display modes turns a single up- or down-arrow press into two keypresses, which meant that it was impossible to select dsrepair mode from the boot menu. Someone in Caldicot had to drive into work to hit the down-arrow for me. A bunch of people who really didn't have to stay at work stayed to keep me company, though, and a couple who left called in a couple times to make sure things were going ok, which was definitely appreciated.)

But enough of that, it's nearly Christmas, so I have a gift for you! Thanks to CreateDigitalMusic and FaLaLaLaLa, I give you Switched On Santa (45MB .zip), featuring your favorite Christmas music played on the Moog synthesizer. Quality's not so great, being pulled off an LP which had probably seen better days, but it's still a half-hour of analog Christmas cheese.

Have a good one, folks. See you in a few days.

Merry Christmas, and congratulations on the permanent account!

You were one of the people I had considered nominating, but by the time I saw the announcement, you had already received a permanent account.

"Luckily I managed to catch one controller before the changes replicated there, but it still took most of the day to get things up and going based on that."

Was this by any chance related in nature to the one-button replication that brought Britain's Ministry of Health to its knees?

I live in fear of easy things....

Not directly, that's for sure! If you mean "was it the same problem", I don't know what happened to Britain's Ministry of Health, but there are no buttons involved -- it's the Active Directory equivalent of NT's PDC to BDC replication, except it's a multimaster setup, which means it's a bit less awkward to recover the "PDC" from the latent-but-good "BDC".
