  • Mood:

putting a name to it

First of all, this is cute, from the regularly-wonderful Meditation Matters:

When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy.” They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life.

And that in terms reminds me of something I found in Wikipedia the other day: Productivism.

Productivism is the belief that measurable economic productivity and growth is the purpose of human organization (e.g., work), and that "more production is necessarily good".

It's not like this is news, but it's been a while since I've thought about things in those terms and the specific word "productivism" was new to me. In the same way that having a diagnosis often makes living with a medical problem easier, being able to point at this thing and say "That's what I have issue with" helps me organize my thoughts.

(I've been doing a lot of thought-organizing lately. I should post about that.)

While I'm quoting things I like, have I pointed out Time Management for Anarchists here yet? The presentation is ok, but the comic (featuring Emma Goldman and Mikhail Bakunin, no less) is great. It also talks about Toronto artist and social commentator Darren O'Donnell (he of "Haircuts By Children"). A passage:

Do you consider yourself an anarchist?

I identify as not being interested in authoritarian structures and hierarchies but I also believe that when you're surrounded by them you have to use them.

Finally: The other day I realized that there are a lot of people who really believe that if they get that next promotion or if only they were making over $100,000 a year they'd finally be able to be happy. I need to remember that by knowing that alone won't do it, I'm already ahead of the game a bit.
